A Shiny Metal Tub

My child bathes in the kitchen sink on a regular basis.
It's how I get the dishes done.
Moms have to do things like this.
To get the dishes done.
Also, he's really dirty.
I mean really dirty.

He likes to sneak dishes into his tub when I'm not looking (and even when I am).
I am careful to wash the fragile and the dangerous pieces when he's not looking.
I'll be sad when he's too big for the sink.
(And maybe the dishes won't get done.)

Brothers on a Thursday Afternoon

It started out yesterday morning as an airplane, complete with control panel, steering wheel, ignition, and wings.  But then he watched the George episode "Grease Monkey in Space", and was inspired to tear the wings off.  Now he affectionately calls his flying machine "pace sa-ul" and sometimes "pane".  He took many trips to the Moon and Mars today and graciously offered his brother a seat in the back (actually he insisted, almost demanded that Gerret go to the moon, but I was just happy he was thinking of the little Pook).

We Jumped on the Bed Today

He is pookier than ever and back to eating food, smiling, and sleeping well. Hip hip hooray!

Sickly's Progress Report

Another day of this:

Poor Pook

Poor Mom

On the bright side, the little food that he's managed to keep down finally exited his body, fully digested, out the proper end this afternoon. We'll wait til PTB gets home to see if he can keep dinner down. (So far every upheaval has taken place down Patrick's front.)

The Pookster is Missing his pook

The Pook hasn't been himself.  He is somehow sick, though I'm not entirely sure how.  All he wants to do is lay his head on my shoulder.  I won't give you the details (they're kind of gross), let's just leave it at he hasn't been himself since yesterday morning.

Larger Numbers

The weather and my sister emerged from the single digits Monday.
Two causes for celebration.

Happy 10th Olivia Kaye!

(Has it really been 10 years??? I remember sitting in the waiting room in the maternity ward for, well.... hours that night and then meeting you for the first time and thinking, sheesh I've waited a real long time to get a sister. But you were well worth the wait.)

Gerret Turned One

Somehow a year has already passed since the arrival of the Pook.  He sure has taken our family for a ride.  We feel blessed each day to have this smiley, bouncy, wild little thing in our lives.  He is the cause of so much laughter and unbelievable moments in our home.  Here's to a year of Gerret!  In my journal on his birthday, I wrote a list of things I love about Gerret and I thought I would include some of it here:
Things I Love about Gerret

The way he watches and copies everyone -- especially Nolan.

How he holds on and bounces up and down and yells "dja, dja" (for jump, jump).

He looks like a little bird when he drinks from a sippy cup.

He bobs his head & shakes his body to any kind of music.

How he always seems to be looking for adventure.

He likes to play peek-a-boo and laughs like crazy when someone will take a moment to participate.

How he is cutely chubby but not so fat I have to clean between any rolls.

When he falls asleep on car rides.

He can climb onto the couch, up the stairs, on Nolan's bed, and would probably climb on everything else in the house too if I allowed it.

He responds to "Pooka" over any other name we call him.

He smiles big and often and goofy.

How he yells "Ah! Ah! Ah!" and screams if you don't shovel food into his mouth fast enough.

Those dimples make his smile pretty killer.

He likes toys better when someone else is playing with them (his imagination hasn't quite kicked in).

He tends to be fairly high strung.

He rubs food in his hair at every meal.

How he sleeps 12 hours every night and is mostly good at taking 2 naps every day.

How his hair gets really curly after a bath.

He is intent on standing in the tub.

Those big dark brown eyes.

How absolutely disgusting his high chair gets (if I don't take it apart frequently to clean it, it starts to grow mold).

How he sleeps through inordinate amounts of noise at 6:00 each morning when the rest of the house gets going (This includes hair dryers, squeaky faucets, microwaves, doors slamming, and often, yelling right outside his door).

He is so cute as he inches his way (quickly) around a room from one piece of furniture to the next.

The way he loves his grandma above almost everyone else.

How patient and forgiving he is with Nolan.

How resilient his little body is.

How he could, in all honesty, use 4 baths a day.

The way he cuddles and makes kisses.

Freeze

Nolan began his morning by retrieving his dump truck from a snow bank.  He requested a paper towel - wiped up some snow- deemed it hopeless- proceeded to tear the paper towel into the smallest possible shreds (even got a little frustrated and almost started crying).
I got an idea.
Use the shreds to make something.
Glue them onto paper or something.
He liked that plan.
I drew sheep.  He squirted the glue delicately and stuck the shreds in place.

And all the while talked about baby's birthday tomorrow.
So he signed his name.  I helped with that part and then wrote Happy Birthday 'Poopta' (Nolan's cute pronunciation of Pooka) on the top of our birthday sheep card.

The three of us mopped the kitchen floor.  I used the big-girl mop.  Nolan used the pretend-play mop.  Gerret used his pant legs.
They got antsy.

We took a time-out to take off any wet pants.  Nolan just in a diaper and white undershirt and Gerret in a brown onesie, we jumped on the bed and repeatedly threw ourselves onto a pile of pillows.  And we giggled and tickled.

Then it was time to finish the mopping job.
It is so nice to have a clean floor.
I can't tell you how nice.

With the clean floor beneath us, we ate lunch.  Front row seats at a breathtaking bird show. Thank you Boppa.  Lunch was and will now forever be way more exciting than it ever has been.

3 Bluejays, 1 tiny brown bird, 1 small black and white bird (it was so beautiful).

---NAP TIME (which I also happen to LOVE)---

Then we had popcorn with Elise.  Gerret likes the "Popcorn Popping" song.  I sing.  He does the hand motions.

The Pookster is 11 months and 31 days old.  He figured out how to climb onto the couch and likes to stand up in his high chair.  (....Cannot be trusted alone)
And today was like a Friday because PTB doesn't have to work again until next Tuesday!

My friend, Megan, wrote on her blog the other day "I wish I could freeze time and keep my kids the ages they are".  I feel like that too.

Today was just perfect.

Zion in Eight Days

I draw your attention to the (pretty cool) new button on the sidebar down near the archive.  It 's a link to the blog Patrick and I just started.  It's called Zion in Eight Days and it's a blog for families.  We hope it will be worthwhile.  Go see it, feel free to go back again, and let us know if you have any suggestions.  We're new at taking blogging seriously (but not too seriously) so we could really use suggestions...

PTB Turns a Year Older (and is admittedly wiser too)

Now I have a husband who is officially an old fart, because (as can be witnessed in the video) he was unable to blow out all of his candles and humbly accepted help from the younger generation. Nolan was happy to oblige.

Nolan and Gerret: Brothers Extraordinaire

Here we have:  Nolan's hat experiments, matching Christmas pajamas from G&G Mitchell, crib play, funny faces, a horse ride through the kitchen, vintage Matchbox from Bapa's childhood, dirty faces, crib climbing, and Gerret making raspberries with a mouth full of food -all of this evidence of why my days are sometimes crazy and always full of fun and surprises.  Gotta love these boys.

Willow

This is Willy, short for Willow-My-Furry-Pillow. He's our new old cat. We re-adopted him, except the first time I adopted him, the summer before my senior year of high school, he had a tail. Willie is a big cat. Something between a small dog and a raccoon. He may still weigh more than Gerret, or at least it's close. As can be observed, he has beautiful blue eyes. They were a selling point.

My adoration of cats started early. I was given a cat for Christmas when I was 18 months old. He was cream colored and mild tempered and I loved everything about him, especially that he was mine and he slept on my bed. During his reign in my parents' house, many other cats came and went. He outlived them all. I knew it was because his intellect was a step or two above the rest. Then he got old and died a couple months before my 17th birthday. That was fairly devastating to me, so I begged my parents for another cat. After almost six months of debating and some good convincing on my part, my dad finally consented and I skipped off to a farm to catch my kitty. The woman in charge wasn't there that week and I knew I couldn't just take the cutest kitten hiding under her porch without asking. So I visited a few times while I waited. I must admit that this cute kitten was feral. I couldn't even touch him. He would hiss and spit and scratch and bite. I knew he was the one for me. And then the day came for the lady's return. It turned out that she had her eye on the same wild ball of white fur. So, I did my best to convince her that he was the one for me. She was doubtful. I did a little more convincing. "Well, if you can catch it, it's yours," she gave in. That was all the go ahead I needed. He hissed and clawed the whole way home.

He didn't come with stripes. They appeared later. At first, he was just this little white thing with blue eyes and a skinny black tail. He was so small that, after being shut in the door more than once, I attached a bell to his collar so everyone was keenly aware of his presence (even if they still weren't thrilled about it). Not that he should have been hard to ignore; he couldn't sit still. And he grew like every kitten does. He was a big old cat before I left for BYU. When I came back he had filled out quite a bit and had strangely won my dad's heart. The two of them were all buddy-buddy and cuddled on the couch every evening, so I threw my hands up and left again for school. Sometime between leaving for my second year at BYU and moving back four years later, my parents acquired four more cats and Willow lost his tail (and some skin on his head, and almost his life, and a bit of dignity) in a fight. My mom claims he was fighting coyotes and I think that sounds pretty cool and tough, so that's what I tell people when they ask where his tail is.

So, now that we're back, we took it upon ourselves to take him under our wing because he asked us to. I think he was getting tired of being low on the totem pole. He's not as wild as he once was, but he can be kind of moody. He only takes affection if he asks for it, otherwise it's smart to leave him alone. We cut him a break, though. After all, he started out absolutely untouchable, has gone unloved for quite some time, and lost his tail in what was probably a pretty fierce scramble for his life.

Here's to Willy, our monsterly cat.

These are a Few of my Favorite Things

Gerret normally doesn't look at the camera.  I have come to not even hope that he will.
