A Happy Ending

And here we find The Pook and Nonoy all ready for bed, after an exhausting, but glorious Christmas Day.  Nolan was so excited to put on his new George pajamas for the first time, and equally excited when he saw Gerret donning another favorite, Lightning McQueen.  Life doesn't get sweeter than this, does it?

Splendorific Saturday for Sisters

I have two sisters. They're both pretty cute girls and lots of fun to be around. They're also both a lot younger than I am, so sometimes I feel more like their mom than their sister and I'm sure they sometimes think of me more of a grumpy adult. So, my Christmas present to them this year was a night for sisters only. I was hoping that it would help remind them that when it comes down to the bare bones truth, I'm really just another one of them (just 15 years older....)
In my humble opinion, the night was a success. We started it out with "make-overs". In other words, I did their hair and put some make up on their flawless little faces. I don't own any hair spray, so I was just hoping that all the curls I painstakingly put in their hair would stay on their own, but much to my dismay, they had vanished before we even left the house. **I have the opposite problem. Curls won't leave my head alone. Sometimes I wonder why both of my sisters got the tame hair and nice eye lashes. Sheesh.**

After they were all cute-ified, we jammed to LOL, Olivia's new favorite group, all the way to Watkins Glen. At their request, we had stuffed crust, pepperoni pizza and root beer at Pizza Hut. While we were waiting for the food, we played a game called Pete and Repeat (I think that's what it's called). This had us pretending to brush our teeth, patting ourselves on the head, and saying things like "boo" and "groovy" right there in our Pizza Hut booth.
I normally would have been embarrassed, but I got caught up in the moment and we had a blast. The pizza was pizza and the root beer was soooo expensive.

We finished just in time to drive down the road to the movie theater and be entertained by the new Disney movie Bedtime Stories. It was cute and it had my sisters laughing pretty hard throughout, so I think it was worth $11. By this time, it was 9:30 and I was certain that I'd have two sleeping girls to carry from the car when we arrived back home. They surprised me and stayed awake to listen to more LOL. And now I have parts of their songs memorized.

I think we were grocery shopping

but the aisles were so crowded with people that I couldn't make out the food on the shelves. That was a bit distracting, especially because shoppping with my two creatures is generally distracting enough. Add 2,000 or so fellow costumers and well, lets just say I started to forget where I was. I kept thinking, how will I make it to the door and still have these two boys in tow? My subconcious was repeating: milk, roast, lettuce, bread.

When I got up this morning, things looked great. I was planning to go to the grocery store and make a trip to the co-op to pick up vegetables for my mom sometime before noon. I wasn't in a rush. Then the school sent out automated calls letting us know that school would close at 11:30. Early Dismissal. Those make my days oh so joyful. The sky was due to dump a ton of snow sometime after 11:30. Considering this news, I thought it would be smart to make my run to the store and farm A.S.A.P (even though I deemed the extremity of the forcast fairly unlikely). So we loaded up. Apparently, the rest of the town had a similar idea. There is only one grocery store in Trumansburg. So, there I was, with the rest of the town, trying to rise triumphant over the jigsaw puzzle formerly known as the Shur Save. I made it out with our four items and my two boys in a mere 55 minutes, just as the sky let loose.

Gerret at 11 Months

Unbelievable.  That's what I think.  What happened to that little baby of mine?  He's so grown up and so active (makes it hard to get a good photo of him...)  Now for some random ramblings about the Pookster:  He eats pretty much everything we eat.  He has a bad habit of rubbing food in his hair when a)He is finished eating or b)He doesn't like what you're trying to feed him.  He is suddenly interested in watching Curious George with Nolan.  He likes to color with crayons (and does an astounding job of it, I might add).  He took a bath (more like he played naked) in one side of the kitchen sink while I did dishes in the other side today.  Thank goodness for double basin sinks!  It worked out well for both of us, we may try it again sometime. His hair curls a lot when it gets wet.  It's also getting pretty long and shaggy looking........ He gets hurt in some small way pretty much every day.  To keep him from hurting himself, I would seriously have to carry him around all day or strap him to something.  So, hopefully he gradually becomes less dangerous.  He graduated to 12 month clothes.  It's crazy to see him in clothes that Nolan was still wearing when Gerret was born!  This kid definitely has something on Nolan as far as size goes.  They'll be in the same clothes by the time they're in elementary school.  He copies all sorts of sounds and words and actions.  I don't know if he understands totally what he's saying, but he does say "dada" and something like "dawdaw" when he points at pictures of dogs on the wall.  He has an infectious laugh and those big dark brown eyes and dimples and oh man, he's just so awful cute.  Sometimes, all I can think is, where did this kid come from?  He couldn't be mine!  Other times, when he's being Baby Crankypants, all I can think is, where did this kid come from?  Take him back!
Most of the time, though, he's a really good boy and a really good climber.  He likes adventure.  I don't know where he gets it from.

Now for these dumb pictures.   The light was nice and that happens so infrequently these days, that I thought I would capitalize on it.  I really only wanted 1 picture of 11 month old Gerret, but it had to be good.  Nolan thought he would get in on the action.  That would have been fine with me, if Gerret would have cooperated.  Like I said, I was only interested in a good picture of 11 month old Gerret.  In my book, that means the audience has ample opportunity to acknowledge how  endearing those eyes are.... and it's focused, and the light is good, and nothing is going too wrong (like boogers, too much food on the face, too much belly showing, distracting background, etc.)  And so, he just would not look up.  When he finally did, I got this:

He's No Longer that Bald, But She's Still that Pretty

Lindsay is quite possibly the greatest mom ever. She's also the best wife anyone could ever have (so sorry for the rest of everyone out there who's not her husband). She has a very quiet strength about her that carries her through even the toughest days. On Sunday last, she taught young womens, gave a talk in sacrament meeting, rehearsed a choir song for the first time, and then lent her support in a village wide christmas concert. She will always tell you about how shy and uncomfortable she is in a public setting, but despite it all she has never let it keep her from helping out when help was needed. And, as depicted, she has to do it all while having at least one boy hanging from her somewhere (even when the little guys are in bed I usually take over for them). I just want this to be a little tribute to the one who writes this blog and takes care of our family. You all know her, but not like I know her. She is as delicate yet firm as she is in the picture. And we do love to take our boys out into the woods--a little hard to do when it dumps snow all over the place . . . alas, we'll need to wait another few months before a picture like this is taken again. She'll still be just as photogenic though.

Our Week

This is what our week was like: Sometime at the beginning of the week, we put up our Christmas tree and decorations. We couldn't fit the fake tree we had last year, so we used just the top of it on a little table in our kitchen. Nolan helped me set up the nativity and Patrick put lights around our kitchen window. It's all very cheery and nice and helps our kitchen seem more cozy and inviting. Monday, Patrick took the day off. He had a dentist appointment in the morning, so we all took a trip to Ithaca. Gerret, Nolan, and I went to Target during part of the appointment and spent the rest of the time in the car, singing songs and eating snacks. After Ithaca, we did family stuff at home.
Tuesday, it was back to the grind (well for Patrick). Nolan helped make cookies while Gerret took his morning nap, then the three of us took a trip with Lisa Richardson to go Visiting Teaching. Taking my boys anywhere semi-public is always an adventure and they did not fail me on this occasion.

Wednesday was Grandma Murray's birthday and we spent the entire day getting ready for her birthday dinner/party, which we hosted.

Gerret was totally wasted after Wednesday's excitement and he just kept sleeping Thursday morning. I started getting a little worried after he'd been in there for 14+ hours and finally broke down and woke him up just after 10 am. Then the boys came with me to an Enrichment Activity. Taking Gerret places sometimes makes me feel that we should just stay at home until he's two. He doesn't want to play by himself, but he doesn't want to sit still in my lap. He doesn't appreciate toys; only taking interest in things that he could significantly damage or that could harm him. These four facts are true at home, but seem to combine against him and take over his entire character when we're in public or semi-public. So I had a monster on my hands and had to leave the activity early. I backed my dad's '95 Dodge Ram out of the driveway and then it stalled in the middle of Rte. 96. I fiddled with the ignition while cars started to pile up behind me. I turned on my hazards and the cars started to go around me. I got the engine to catch just as the public transit bus swerved around our truck. By this time (a whole maybe 90 seconds of frantic fiddling), Gerret was fast asleep in the back seat and Nolan was fading. Thursday night we had the missionaries over for dinner.

It snowed all night Thursday and into Friday and we ended up getting enough for school to be canceled, so I watched The Aunts, which really ended up being The Aunts watched Nolan. He really likes them and was so excited when Aunt Olivia took him outside to play in the snow. When Patrick got home, we piled in the car and went to the Ithaca Chapel to see one of my young women get baptized. I have been the Young Woman President in the branch since August-ish and had only one partially active young woman until recently, and then suddenly my once-a-month Young Woman's Sunday meeting turned into an every week investigator class with two interested young women. Well, one of them got baptized this Friday and we went to it (the other girl is getting baptized next week and my investigator class will turn into a new member class).
Saturday afternoon I left the boys and went to see Ithaca Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker with my mom and sisters. It was really good and I'm thinking about taking up ballet now. We got home just in time to hop in the car for the Branch "Christmas Party". Really, it should have been called the Branch "Christmas Feast", but we enjoyed the food and all was well.
Today, Patrick and I both spoke in Sacrament meeting. After church, I stayed to sing with our choir in the Trumansburg Area Churches Christmas Concert. And now we're here, ready to collapse before it all starts again tomorrow.

'Cheeeesss?'

I know this picture was already posted, but can you really get enough of this kid? Look at that face? Believe it or not that's the reaction after the command 'Smile'. And he says 'cheess' on his own, no need to ask. Point the camera at him and he knows what to do. Oh it's a camera 'cheeeesss'. He may not even be looking into the lens, or even paying you much attention at all, but he'll throw a 'cheeeessss' your way. His 'smile' is also more of a confused look. He's trying, but trying in a way that is going down in flaming glory. I can't say enough about him though. He always makes me wonder how anyone could think it best to not have kids. Again--just look at him. He is one of our pride and joys and he's so much fun to have around. He's one of the cutest kids I've ever known and he makes a mom and dad feel like a million bucks. Three cheers for Nolan, the cutest 2 year old I know.

Nolan and His Chores

From Collages
This one deserves a few words. We decided in family council a few weeks ago that Nolan is ready to take on some responsibility. So he is now responsible for rinsing when I wash dishes and holding the dust pan when I sweep. He is very thorough at both jobs. He would be perfectly pleased to do both jobs entirely himself. Usually, he insists upon having his own dish rag so he can scrub any spots I missed. He also decided to do the sweeping when I couldn't help the other day. The dust pan was missing for two days after that. I guess the point I'm trying to get across is that though I am so happy that he is such a good helper and so eager to keep things clean, sometimes it makes my job a little bit harder to help him help me. I guess it's all a part of teaching your children. Another part of it is having to change his clothes a few times a day.

A Look at the Boys

For now, I think I need to revert back to mostly pictures and less talk on this thing. The memory card on my camera was full for almost a month, so when I finally made room the other day, I filled it up again in the excitement of having a camera to use. So anyway, here some photos of my cute boys, in case anyone forgot what they look like.
